Iron (golf)
Iron is a type of club used in the sport of golf to propel the ball towards the hole. Irons typically have shorter shafts and smaller clubheads than woods, the head is made of solid iron or steel, and the head’s primary feature is a large, flat, angled face, usually scored with grooves.
What do the different irons do in golf?
Irons are divided into three sets; long irons (2, 3, and 4-irons), mid-irons (5, 6, and 7-irons), and short irons (8 and 9-irons, plus the pitching wedge). Long irons are used to hit the ball further with a shorter loft, while the short irons are designed to produce a higher loft.

Wilson Staff Launch Pad Iron Set
Wilson Staff Launch Pad irons are packed with features designed to help get the ball airborne while delivering distance, forgiveness, and confidence.
Launch Pad Sole
The Launch Pad Sole design provides exactly what the name suggests, a sole design that effectively floats above the turf, resulting in a higher launching ball flight.
Hollow Construction
Hollow construction supports an incredibly thin face for maximum ball speed and increased distance.
Designed to Put Long Irons Back in The Bag
Long irons feature wider, more forgiving soles, with traditional game-improvement sole widths across the shorter irons. The end result is consistent ball contact with less chunking and greater distance.
Lightweight Shaft with a Midsize Grip
The lightweight of Launch Pad irons makes it easy to generate high clubhead speeds with minimum effort. The Midsize grip is comfortable and enhances the feel for greater confidence with every swing.
Cobra King SPEEDZONE Combo Iron Set

Lamkin Crossline Connect Black
Shaft
UST Recoil ESX 480(Graphite)
Carbon Topline(Irons)
Carbon fiber inserts are 40% lighter than steel, saving 3 grams to move the CG lower and increase ball speed.
Shape(Irons)
Extreme heel and toe weighting create a lower CG and a higher MOI than most traditional iron shapes allow.
Technology(Irons)
A PWRSHELL face insert is forged with a larger thin pocket from the heel to toe, and a deeper undercut to enhance ball speed and launch across the face.
Progressive Head Construction(Irons)
The long irons, mid irons and wedges are designed with progressive head shapes, grooves, and hosel lengths to optimize launch and spin through the set.
Hollow Split Rails(Hybrids)
Hollow rails flex more than solid rails, creating a 70% larger hot spot area with the aid of a split speed channel.
Back Weighting(Hybrids)
Weight concentrated low and back creates the most efficient transfer of energy to the ball for high trajectories that land softly into greens.
Refined Shape(Hybrids)
Slightly larger than a traditional hybrid, the shape features a high MOI and a square leading edge for longer and straighter ball flights.
So Pick out Your Clubs and let me know how they work in the comments section below. You can even brag about your favorite round of golf.
Hello,
What a great article. I was actually just looking for golf drivers for my Brother for Christmas. I had found a set of Nike clubs that he saw on FB, but they didn’t come with any drivers. I don’t know much about golfing, so this is great that I ran across this.
Thanks for the great information!
Katrina
You are welcome Katrina. I am always glad to help. Check out the website because they also carry Nike clubs.
I am learning a new language (Spanish) because I emigrated from my home country. And reading your blog is like learning a language I know nothing about. 😀
It’s obvious I know absolutely nothing about golf. All the terminology is new to me. But it is interesting to read about something new, isn’t it?
Sometimes I am reading a book in which one of the characters is playing golf. So it’s not that I haven’t heard any of the terms ever. But you know how it is, every profession, every sport, any specialization has its own specific language. Thanks for your description. 🙂
Great, I am glad that I could assist. Now get some clubs and try the game out.
